Saint-Émilion is one of the most visited destinations in the Gironde — and for good reason. A UNESCO World Heritage village, exceptional wines, underground caves and medieval architecture all within 40 kilometres of Bordeaux. But getting there and back, especially if you plan to taste wine, requires a little planning. Here is everything you need to know.
How far is Saint-Émilion from Bordeaux?
Saint-Émilion sits approximately 40 kilometres east of Bordeaux, following the Dordogne river through vineyards and rolling hills. By road, the journey takes 35 to 50 minutes depending on traffic.
Option 1 — Train
A regional TER train runs between Bordeaux Saint-Jean station and Saint-Émilion, with a journey time of around 35 minutes. It sounds convenient — but the station is located about 2 kilometres from the village itself, with no regular shuttle service to cover the gap. You will need to walk, hire a local taxi, or pre-arrange pickup. Trains are also infrequent, especially on weekends and during school holidays.
Option 2 — Bus
There is no direct bus service between Bordeaux city centre and Saint-Émilion village. Some regional coach services pass nearby but are not practical for a day trip with flexible timings.
Option 3 — Rental Car
Renting a car gives you flexibility, but comes with a significant catch — if you are visiting Saint-Émilion to taste wine, you cannot drive back. The roads around the vineyards are narrow and parking in the village is extremely limited during summer. Designated driver arrangements rarely make for a satisfying wine tour.
Option 4 — Private Driver with BordeauxRide
This is the option that makes the most sense for a wine-focused visit. Your BordeauxRide chauffeur picks you up directly from your hotel or address in Bordeaux, drops you at the entrance to the village and waits while you explore the caves, taste the grands crus and browse the local producers. When you are ready to leave — on your schedule, not the train timetable — your chauffeur takes you back to Bordeaux. No parking stress, no designated driver, no missed last train.
What does a private transfer to Saint-Émilion cost?
A one-way transfer from Bordeaux to Saint-Émilion starts from €55 with BordeauxRide. For a full-day hire including waiting time, contact us for a personalised quote. For groups of up to 8, our Mercedes V-Class keeps the cost per person very competitive.
When is the best time to visit Saint-Émilion?
Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions — mild temperatures, fewer crowds and the vineyards at their most photogenic. During the Bordeaux Wine Festival in June, demand for transport to Saint-Émilion peaks significantly — book well in advance.
